Can't get enough? Their roaster's training lab is just down the street. If Italy is known for its espresso, then Little Italy is known for Happy Bones. Take a look above and feel the sun drench your skin through the ceiling skylight while enjoying a pastry from local and trusty NYC bakeries. However, it is not just the gallery-style space that makes the coffee shop unique. Part of what sets the shop apart from other cafes in the city is its minimalist decor, which consists of white brick walls, angled steel shelves and edgy stenciled branding. Added and mixing steamed milk to the espresso in a 1:1 ratio (or more), making it like a miniature caffe latte or cortado. Seating's spare, but not impossible, and in fact you're encouraged to pause – alongside art books and journals to purchase are pages to leaf through while you drink a graciously prepared Counter Culture brew (where soy, almond, and oat milk are the non-dairy alternatives). Happy Bones is a compact cafe located in New York City's ultra-hip Nolita neighborhood. But she managed to create three distinct zones. Previously, it was a meat locker for the butcher shop next door. Ghislaine Viñas had only 450 square feet of down-and-dirty concrete-floored space to work with. In a tour-de-force of combining both artsy industrial chic and warmth, this space lands in Manhattan from New Zealand, and fills a welcome niche in Soho's landscape for those who seek a sunny window, a cortado, and a friendly face. The first permanent location, a storefront by Ghislaine Viñas Interior Design, is now gaining additional admirers for its fresh style. So on a bright yet cold Sunday morning, I walked down to Nolita at around 8am to visit Happy Bones, an ethically-minded NYC coffee shop on Broome Street. You can find the cafe nestled by Hawthorne. Since its opening in March 2000, it didnt take long for Cafe Bones to earn its solid reputation for being the perfect hangout for both owners and pooches in the inner west of Sydney.
At Happy Bones, you'll want to grab something hot just to snap an Insta-worthy picture of your beverage here – brightly printed blue and black paper cups are adorned with whimsical doodles of "happy bones" in homage to this small yet uncluttered cafe. Writing, films, travel, family, friends, yoga, cafes, fun, books and music.
Fun fact: this cafe used to be a walk-in refrigerator.
